A newly released image teases the upcoming Super Bowl ad that will feature Walter White from Breaking Bad. Seeing the iconic character returning only to sell products might seem cringeworthy to some fans, but they should remember that Breaking Bad itself could make viewers cringe at times.
These moments sometimes came from things that were all too relatable like awkward social situations. Others showed the characters going too far or making decisions that made viewers squirm in their seats. And some were just flat-out embarrassing. While there might have been more violent moments in Breaking Bad, these cringeworthy moments according to fans on Reddit were more painful.
Skylar Singing Happy Birthday To Ted
Ted Beneke may not have been a huge character in the series, but he played a hand in some of the most cringeworthy scenes. When Skyler goes to work for her former boss, it is clear there are sparks between them but few things could have prepared fans for Ted’s office birthday party when she performs a sultry version of “Happy Birthday” in front of all their colleagues.
Redditor Shimoshamman admitted they knew what was coming and “actually avoided it and skipped ahead.” There are some intense scenes in the show that can be hard to watch, so it’s funny that some can’t stomach this particular musical moment.
Walt Makes A Move On His Boss
Unsurprisingly, Skyler ends up having an affair with Ted, partially to punish Walt for his criminal behavior. Of course, Walt does not learn that lesson very well and spirals downwards in some truly embarrassing ways, including a clumsy pass at his attractive boss, Carmen.
In terms of the most destructive things Walt has done, this doesn’t really compare, but Redditor SwingingSalmon still admits “that was bad.” Seeing Walt unravel in such a pathetic way has led to some fans declaring this one of the worst scenes in Breaking Bad.
Walt’s Speech At School
The midair plane crash was one of the most unexpected moments in Breaking Bad and was inadvertently caused by Walt and his actions. However, he doesn’t really take the blame on himself and instead finds some ways to justify it during a school assembly in the aftermath.
Redditor mrdarp recalls “that got so awkward” as Walt is called upon to give some comforting words to the students and proceeds to explain why the crash wasn’t so bad compared to other tragedies. The show clearly relishes how uncomfortable things get while also showing Walt losing more of his humanity.
Walt Assaults Skyler
Though Walt certainly got worse over time, there are moments that suggest he was just actually an awful television character from very early on in the show. One such disturbing moment comes when Walt assaults his own wife in the kitchen causing Skyler to push him off of her.
One Redditor claims they “had to turn it off at that point because I was so unsettled by it.” Indeed, it is easy to see how a moment like this is so off-putting as fans see Walt losing control towards someone he is supposed to love and protect.
Walt is a very smart man, but he is also a man with a huge ego. Sometimes the latter aspect of his personality wins out and he acts out in reckless ways. Continuing to make a fortune from his drug empire, Walt decides to take his son car shopping.
Redditor rexcannon called it “the most blatant form of product placement” with a montage of cars set to dubstep music. It could be that it was meant to be a funny sequence but the over-the-top nature clearly didn’t sit well with all fans.
Walt Convinces Hank That Heisenberg Is Still Out There
While money is one thing that fuels Walt’s ego, he is perhaps even more concerned about the recognition he feels he deserves as a criminal mastermind. When Hank feels that the recently deceased Gale is the real Heisenberg, Walt drunkenly suggests Gale was not smart enough and Hank’s true target is still at large.
Redditor Slabbo admits they “shouted “NO!” at the tv like I was watching a hockey game.” Of course, that is the kind of reaction the show wanted. Fans are driven to disbelief and frustration to see how petty and self-destructive Walt can be at times.
Walt Tries To Confront Ted
While Walt’s attempt to kiss his boss is bad, it is not where his bad decisions end after learning about Skyler’s affair with Ted. He decides to visit Ted at his office for what he claims is just a talk, but ends up attempting to throw a potted plant through his window and is dragged out by security.
It is a meltdown of epic proportions and one Redditor observes that it “seemed like he was treading on no gas at that point.” Given how capable and unstoppable Walt can seem at times, it does feel uncomfortable seeing him so impotent.
Walt Forces His Son To Drink
Though Walt’s criminal empire was initially to support his family, things with his wife and children soon spoil. In fact, some of the most uncomfortable moments in the show are family interactions. During a party with the family, Walt decides to let his son has a drink with him and Hank. However, the father-son moment soon turns ugly with Walt forcing Walt Jr. to keep drinking and when Hank steps in to stop him, Walt loses his cool with Hank.
Redditor kentathon claims “that was the scene where I stopped caring about what happens to Walt.” It might not seem as significant of a turning point as other moments, but it shows Walt’s ego sometimes means more to him than his family.
Walt Visits Brock
One of the defining moments in Walt’s transformation into Heisenberg is poisoning Brock. Almost killing this innocent young boy convinced many fans that Walt is the villain of his story. The aftermath of this is the cringey part as Walt attempts to be friendly with the boy he poisoned while Brock gives him the cold shoulder.
Redditor vietbond recalls the scene with “Walt sitting on the couch asking Brock about his hospital stay” as being particularly hard to watch. Walt is usually very good at playing the good guy, but Brock seems to sense something is wrong with him leading to a scene of tense and cold silence.
Jesse Has Dinner With The Whites
At the height of the tensions between Walt and Skyler, Walt decides to invite Jesse over for dinner at their house. What follows is a hilarious sequence of Jesse suffering through angry silence and Skyler openly talking about her infidelities.
Redditor nicogeeko declares that out of all the cringeworthy moments on Breaking Bad, “this is the only one that makes me physically wince.” It is exactly the reaction the scene was meant to deliver as a pitch-perfect bit of cringe humor for the series.
