Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe confessed that he almost ruined Ron and Hermione’s first kiss in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. The three protagonists of the Harry Potter movie series debuted their roles at a very young age, forging friendships as they navigated the entertainment industry together. Naturally, Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson considered each other siblings more than anything else as they worked on the films. Watson suggested that it was this sibling-like relationship that made it so difficult for her and Grint to get through the kissing scene and in one of the biggest revelations of the Harry Potter reunion Radcliffe admitted that he didn’t make it any easier for his fellow co-stars.

Daniel Radcliffe Couldn’t Help But Ruin Ron & Hermione’s First Kiss Scene

Daniel Radcliffe didn’t make the already awkward situation any easier. Instead, he made it a point to watch Watson and Grint as they portrayed the intimate moment between their characters during the highly anticipated Deathly Hallows scene. “I did not make this better, because I’ve been told that I was just being an absolute d*ck about this, and was like, ‘I’m gonna come on set and watch you guys kiss!’” While many wanted to bear witness to the pivotal moment between Ron and Hermione as it unfolded, it appears that Radcliffe was just trying to give his long-time friends a hard time about it.

Despite his meddling, Radcliffe actually revealed during the pre-release marketing for The Deathly Hallows Part II in 2011 that he felt his costars actually pulled the moment off perfectly, and it was partly because of their relationship:

“What’s nice is that it’s there but it’s not lingered on, I’m sure Ron and Hermione will get a big applause from the audience, and they should, they’ve been waiting long enough to see that happen. But what’s lovely is the part after they break up and start laughing, I can see that it’s just Rupert and Emma.”

Emma Watson Called Hermione & Ron’s First Kiss “So Wrong”

Emma Watson recounted how she was feeling during the shooting Hermione and Ron’s kiss scene. “Obviously, us kissing was the most horrifying thing either of us has ever had to go throughIt was meant to be like this dramatic makeout, but you [Rupert Grint] and I just kept corpsing, we just kept laughing. And I was just really scared we were never gonna get it because we just couldn’t take it seriously.” Having spent over ten years getting to know each other as friends and colleagues, Watson and Grint struggled to stay in character while filming this scene. At one point, Watson said she had to seize the moment, knowing that Grint was most likely not going to make the first move:

“I knew I was kind of going to be the one to kind of make this thing happen because Rupert was not going to. So I just had to go for it.”

Rupert Grint also offered his own thoughts to People Magazine, doubling down on just how awkward Ron and Hermione’s first kiss scene really was:

I’ve known Emma since she was literally 9 years old and we had this very brother-sister relationship. It just felt very surreal. I have a memory of her face getting closer and closer. Like, ‘Oh my God.’ I can’t really remember anything apart from that.

Fortunately, Watson and Grint managed to get the scene done and as they reminisced together during the Harry Potter reunion special, laughs were had by all. Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson continue to be household names and the reunion only further validates their tireless commitment to making sure they portrayed their characters in the most believable way possible. Despite the struggles they encountered while filming, the cast of the Harry Potter movies still holds a special place in the hearts of millions of fans.
