Country music superstar and former judge Keith Urban will come back for the American Idol season 21 finale as a mentor and performer, and he reflected on what it means to him. Keith is a Grammy Award-winning singer who became a judge during American Idol season 12 in 2013, along with Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, and Nicki Minaj. Keith returned three more times, which were Idol‘s final seasons on FOX. His fellow judges at the time were Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick, Jr. Keith will appear in the American Idol season 21 finale to mentor Top 3 finalists Iam Tongi, Colin Stough, and Megan Danielle, who will sing his songs.
In an interview with People, Keith spoke about his American Idol return and how special it is to him. He said, “To be able to come in as a mentor, and play as well, is incredible. That was home for me for several seasons, and the mentoring part is probably one of the things I always enjoyed the most, getting to work with the artist one-on-one.” Keith shared that he thinks Iam, Colin, and Megan are “all ready” for the American Idol season 21 finale. He explained, “If you’ve made it this far, I think you’re [good].”
Keith Urban Wants To Inspire American Idol Finalists With Performance
Keith specifically chose his song “Wild Hearts” to perform during the American Idol season 21 finale because he thought it could serve as an inspiration to the contestants. He explained, “I chose it because I think it really lyrically suits the journey that these artists are all on, and getting to play on that stage with my band is going to feel great.” Keith also hopes to encourage American Idol viewers to pursue their dreams. He added, “The song is definitely an anthemic call to following your dreams, for sure.”
In addition to Keith, many other music stars will take the stage alongside the American Idol season 21 Top 12 finalists during the finale. Current judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan will perform. Other music stars who have been announced include Pitbull, TLC, Lainey Wilson, Lauren Daigle, James Blunt, Ellie Goulding, Jazmine Sullivan, Jelly Roll, REO Speedwagon frontman Kevin Cronin, and Kylie Minogue. In addition, American Idol season 2 winner and runner-up Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken will sing in honor of the 20th anniversary of their finale.
Keith was always a very supportive American Idol judge. He was often moved to tears by the contestants’ performances and really immersed himself in the experience. Keith truly cared about the finalists and gave them wonderful advice. It will be a real treat to see him work with Iam, Colin, and Megan, and to hear them sing his songs. The finale is sure to be a night full of excitement and surprises, along with the thrilling announcement of the winner. The contestants needed someone to help take their performances to another level in order to secure the win. Keith is the perfect choice to be their mentor.
The American Idol season 21 finale airs Sunday, May 21 at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
