Spoilers for The Last of Us season 1 finale below!

HBO’s The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin recently revealed that season 2 will further explore the infected hive mind. The popular video game adaptation stars Pedro Pascal as Joel Miller, a weathered survivor who is tasked to safely escort 14-year-old Ellie across a post-apocalyptic United States filled with people infected by a mind-controlling fungus. Although The Last of Us received near-universal praise for its compelling storytelling, The Last of Us has faced some criticism regarding its overall lack of infected.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Speaking on the final episode of HBO’s The Last of Us Podcast, Mazin discussed how the nature of the infection will be addressed in The Last of Us season 2. The co-creator and writer explained that the Cordyceps hive mind concept and its intricate “interconnectivity” will be further explored when The Last of Us returns. Read what Mazin said below:

And that, I will say, is something that I think we will be exploring further in the next season. I think this first time around, we were learning so much about how to create the Infected and how to televise them in a way that was exciting and didn’t seem goofy or weird or artificial. I think we figured out that. I think this next season, the interconnectivity of them, and the risk of stepping on the wrong thing, that stuff is going to be brought forward more for sure.

What to Expect from The Last of Us Season 2

Although several key episodes of The Last of Us season 1 featured a wealth of infected, namely episodes 1, 2, and 5, the remaining six episodes hardly included any infected at all. On the heels of the season 1 finale, Mazin addressed the concerns and stated that there will be more scenes of infected in The Last of Us season 2. The co-creator also added that the upcoming season will likely expand the variety of infected types.

The Last of Us season 1 finale concluded with Joel committing to his lie that the Fireflies did not have much use for Ellie and her immunity. He attempted to cover his tracks by stating that a group of unknown raiders attacked the hospital, killing most of the faction inside. With her final words of the season, Ellie accepts Joel’s explanation but clearly feels that he is not telling her the whole truth. Going into season 2, the relationship Joel and Ellie built over months of their journey may become tenuous and strained.

Ellie will finally have a chance at a better life with Joel at the Jackson, Wyoming survivor community. However, with the purpose of her life ripped away from her by Joel’s actions, Ellie may undergo a significant personality change that will alter their relationship. As The Last of Us season 2‘s premiere is likely over a year away, audiences will have to wait and see how Joel’s lie affected Ellie.
