Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof admits that he still does not understand how the show became a breakthrough hit. Created by Lindelof, Jeffrey Lieber and J. J. Abrams, Lost followed the story of survivors of a plane crash who find themselves stranded on a mysterious island where not everything is as it seems. Running for six seasons between 2004 and 2010, the series garnered a slew of award nominations and has regularly been considered one of the most successful television series of all time.
In a recent interview with Esquire, the writer and producer recently looked back at the hit series which helped him to become a household name. Suggesting that Lost’s creative team remained “weird and mysterious and potentially frustrating” throughout its entire run, he is still not sure what made the show so successful. Check out his comments below:
I think that I still kind of don’t understand how it became a hit, even all the way through all the collaborators we worked with. We never changed the character of the show, we stayed weird and mysterious and potentially frustrating. I am so grateful for the fact that it broke through, but I still don’t know why. If I did, I would do it again.
Will Lost Ever Get A Revival Or Reboot?
Series revivals and reboots are becoming increasingly common for networks and studios looking to capitalize on the previous success of hugely popular shows. With many of Lost’s contemporary shows, such as Heroes and Dexter, already getting their own series revivals, the question remains whether it too will eventually follow suit and return to screens in an updated form. With the original series regularly delivering ABC record viewership numbers, there would certainly be plenty of justification to drive such a decision.
However, while ABC has reportedly already been considering the potential of a Lost reboot or revival since 2010, Lindelof has previously stated that he would not be interested in being involved in such a project. Nonetheless, he still feels that “it would be really exciting if there’s another incarnation of Lost”. Lindelof’s only condition is that he hopes any plans to continue or reboot the show does not attempt to bring back the original characters and undo Lost’s original controversial ending.
Though a potential return to Lost would appeal to many of the show’s original viewers, a new iteration may not necessarily guarantee the same levels of success. Any attempt at replicating Lost’s popular appeal would require an in-depth knowledge of what drove it to begin with, something that Lindelof has admitted eludes even his understanding. Perhaps some new creative will eventually manage to solve Lost’s greatest mystery and bring it back to screens, but at least one of its creators seems content to be confounded by its enduring legacy.
