R29 Style Picks: Everything We Want To Buy In May

Okay, so it’s safe to say that April was a washout. Despite our best intentions for stepping out in our spring wardrobe, the wet weather put a dampener on our spirit and our style. True, rain-ready fashion can be cute but it’s hard to feel enthusiastic about waterproofs when you were hoping for the start of Aperol spritz season.

Thankfully, May has arrived to offer us a spring redo, one which will (fingers crossed) include much sunnier skies. With more bank holidays than we know what to do with, this month is an opportunity to bring out the looks, even if it’s just to toast the first BBQ of the year in the back garden.

To celebrate the sun finally putting its hat on, we’re gazing lovingly at short-sleeved shirts, gingham dresses and even strappy sandals.

Ottomon Hands Zephyr Hoop Earrings, $, available at Ottomon HandsI’m yet to get in on the racer jacket trend. Not because I don’t want to but because finding a vintage design in a UK size 14/16 seems impossible. Luckily, I’ve just discovered Y2K haven Minga for the cool girl alternative.

Minga London Chiara Black Vegan Racer Jacket, $, available at Minga LondonThe studs! The square toe! The handy strap to keep your feet secure! I need a pair, stat.

Pretty Ballerinas Kristen, $, available at Pretty BallerinasAlicia Lansom, Associate EditorPerfect tank tops are hard to find but this chocolate cut-off just about does it.

Ninety Percent Alex Vest In Turkish Coffee, $, available at Ninety PercentWe love clothes that can be worn by everyone, which is why I was happy to see Damson Madder’s new unisex collection. I’ll be snapping up shirts for both me and my boyfriend this spring.

Vagabond Luisa Sandals, $, available at VagabondKristine Romano, Associate Photo EditorI love a slouchy white sock and as I trade my trousers for more spring and summer-appropriate skirts, these will complete any look.

Weekday State Slouch Socks, $, available at WeekdayA couple of months back, I found my dream pair of Mary Janes in my local charity shop. They’ve been glued to my feet ever since but very sadly they’re already falling apart. I’m on the lookout for a new, sturdy pair that will last and I love the look of these from Charles & Keith.

Charles and Keith Rounded Square-Toe Mary Janes – Black, $, available at Charles and KeithThe neckline! The sleeves! The gingham! The ties! This is my idea of the summer dress to waft around in.

Damson Madder Cassandra Bow Midi Dress, $, available at Damson MadderSadhbh O’Sullivan, Health & Living EditorThose wily minxes at Uniqlo got me again! A tank top with a built-in bra is not a new idea but here it’s perfected.

Uniqlo Ribbed Cropped Sleeveless Bra Top, $, available at UniqloSoon (so soon!), most of my skirts, which are made of cord, suede or wool, will be far too warm for regular wear. I love the structure and length of this beige number from COS, which has far more breathability.

COS Pleated Midi Wrap Skirt, $, available at COSMy wife and I recently got each other rings from Seb Brown for our 30th birthdays and a distant longing for his work has morphed into a bit of a fixation. I have no need for this single rat earring. But the want is deep-rooted.

Seb Brown Le Rat Earring, $, available at Seb BrownJackie Kilikita, Acting Beauty DirectorI’m willing my hair to grow faster just so I can twist it into this ocean-inspired claw clip. It’s chaotic and I love it.

Tort Elli Clip In Sea Camo, $, available at TortIt’s officially that in-between weather: chilly in the morning, spring by 11am, summer at 3pm and cold again in the evening. My winter coat is much too hefty to be worn throughout the day but this bottle-green trench seems just right.

ASOS DESIGN Longline Trench Coat in Khaki, $, available at ASOSThis summer I want to be a crisp white shirt person (if my clumsy nature will let me). I’d team this with straight, blue jeans, tucked in or out depending on whether I want to feel put-together or comfy.

The Frankie Shop Lui Organic Cotton-Poplin Shirt, $, available at Matches FashionVenus Wong, Senior Travel WriterThis striped turtleneck top is such a cute basic and would look amazing on its own or layered underneath some denim dungarees. The on-sale price is the cherry on top.

Boden High Neck Ribbed Top, $, available at BodenOur shopping team colleagues across the pond constantly rave about the Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag. I can totally see the hype: It comes with an adjustable strap that can be worn across the waist or cross-body, and the boxy shape is generous in terms of internal volume. For £38, this waterproof bag is pretty approachable.

Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag 1L, $, available at LululemonThis smocked dress has been a spring fashion favourite for me. The fitted bodice and balloon sleeves are so flattering and the combination of teal fabric against the delicate floral pattern is giving English garden party guest, which is my desired aesthetic always.
